CAROL’S HONOUR
A unique honour from Langside College was given to Carol Daly, Deputy Chief Executive of Castlemilk Economic Development Agency (CEDA) at their prestigious Graduation Ceremony on September 13. Carol was one of the first recipients of the newly instituted, Langside Achievement Award which will be given to former students who have brought distinction to themselves and the College.
Carol was a student there from 1984 and obtained 5 Highers which took her on to Strathclyde University where she obtained a joint Honours Degree in Geography and History. But because she couldn't find a job, she took a post graduate qualification in Careers Guidance and got a job with Gorbals Initiative as their Careers Guidance Advisor. In 1999 she was appointed Head of Client Services at CEDA and became Deputy Chief Executive the following year.

Said Carol, 'I left school at 15 to work in the family fruit and veg and chip shop business on Arran. Then I got married and raised my two daughters. By the time they went to secondary school I realised I needed qualifications if I was going to get a decent job. That's when I signed up at Langside. They were very, very encouraging and raised my aspirations to go to University. When I graduated I felt really good but was disappointed when I started to apply for jobs because I had no relevent, current experience. That's when I went for the post graduate Diploma and that made the difference. I loved my work at Gorbals Initiative where I stayed eight years.'

Offering advice, Carol went on, 'My time at Langside was very worthwhile. I got the motivation and the encouragement and that makes the difference. I firmly believe that many people have the ability to do what I've done but are stuck because they don't have the knowledge about where to go to get the information they need . Speaking face to face with someone who knows the information or knows how to access the right information is vital. That's why our door is always open at CEDA for anyone who wants that kind of help.'
